UCD Planning Refusal is a Victory for Local Residents

Labour Party Councillor for the Pembroke Ward in Dublin South East, Dermot Lacey, has described the decision by An Bord Pleanala to refuse permission for a major development on the lands of the former Jefferson Smurfitt HQ and UCD lands as “a major victory for local residents.”

Councillor Dermot Lacey commented, “This outrageous application was for a development of nearly 500 apartments, office blocks, and shops. The development would have had a severe impact on the community and seriously damaged relations between local residents and UCD.

“In fact, the entire proposal represented an extraordinary low in the behaviour expected of a major National University towards local concerns.

“The proposal was the result of an almost secret deal between the UCD Authorities and a private developer (Pamarette Ltd) without as much as a cursory note to the residents most affected. Site notices were located about a mile and a half from the houses most affected.

“The big lesson for the UCD authorities and their developers is that all future developments should first be discussed with local residents. I hope this marks the end of trying to go behind the backs of those who live and raise families in the area, and that dialogue can begin between the community and UCD.

“As the only public representative to lodge an appeal, I salute the residents who put in their money and their time to protect their community. Their actions contrast with the duplicity of UCD in seeking to damage it.”
