Liberty Week
LIBERTY PROJECT TO MARK LABOUR MOVEMENT ROLE IN 1916
Councillor Dermot Lacey has welcomed the Liberty Project, a joint initiative of the Labour Party and SIPTU that has been set up to mark the role of the Labour movement in the 1916 Rising as well as key events leading up to and after the Rising including the foundation of the Labour Party in 1912 and the lockout in 1913.
He said: “It is very important to mark the role of James Connolly, founder of the Labour Party, and the Irish Citizen Army, also founded by Connolly, in the 1916 Rising.
Dermot Lacey welcomed the fact that the Liberty events commemorating 1916 take place on the anniversary of the actual week that led to the Rising on the 24th April, 1916. The Liberty Project week commences next Monday, April 18th with a launch of a CD archive of James Larkin photos. The full list of events is available on the Labour website at www.labour.ie . Further events are to be organised for next year as part of the celebrations of the
90th anniversary of the Rising.
“Connolly’s ideas, as well as those of his co founder of the Labour Party, James Larkin, are just as relevant today particularly with abuses of our migrant workers coming to light, and the ongoing problems with the peace process in the north of Ireland.
“Connolly and Jim Larkin fought for the rights of workers of all nationalities, and fought against colonialism. They campaigned for equality and championed the rights of women, who played a huge role in the Irish Citizen Army.”
