Letter to Editor – Commitment to Local Government

Dear Editor,
Your “Wigmore” column “lawyers for labour” last month clearly attracted my attention. As a Public Representative in Dublin South East for the last twelve years I am obviously interested in, and committed to, the future of the area in which I have lived all my life.
However last June I sought re-election to Dublin City Council and was
grateful that the electorate returned me with such a good vote. I did not do so to use Local Government as a stepping stone to something, or somewhere, else. In my view the interests and needs of the people I represent are best served by a fundamentally reformed, restructured and remapped system of Local Government – that is what I committed myself to when I sought re-election to the Council and that is what I intend to honour. If others use Local Government simply for their own purposes please do not count me as part of such a cynical group.
The new Magill, unlike the alleged Public Service Broadcaster, RTE, has thankfully, broadened the range of commentators given space to report on Irish life. In my view, in that respect, it is a breath of fresh air. One further step would be for Magill to become the journal that deals with Local Government matters in a serious and comprehensive manner.
Finally can I confirm that I look forward to actively working for the re-election of my Party colleague Ruairi Quinn who has served Dublin South East and this Country so well for so many years.
Yours sincerely,
Councillor Dermot Lacey
