Tenant Purchases of City Council Flats (Letter to Editor)

Dear Editor,

As someone who supports the policy of enabling Dublin City Council tenants purchase their flats I was intrigued by the letter from former Councillor, Chris Andrews ( 23rd August). In his five years as a member of the City Council, I cannot recall one occasion on which Mr Andrews sought to advance such a policy. Nor can I recall even one occasion when he sought to increase the financial resources made available to the Council to develop an appropriate Housing Strategy for Dublin.

For Mr Andrews, from the comfort of the sidelines, to now start lecturing us on how we should implement the new policy is simply incredulous. However, if he truly wishes to do so some good, he might contact his Party colleague the Minister for (sic) the Environment and Local Government, urging him to lift the insistence that all monies raised from the sale of City Council flats be returned to that Department. It is clear however that if we are ever to address the
housing crisis in Dublin we will require a level of support and less bureaucratic interference from the Custom House than we have ever experienced before. Quite frankly I don’t believe they are capable of it.

Yours sincerely,

Councillor Dermot Lacey
66 Beech Hill Drive,
Donnybrook,
Dublin 4.
