Open Letter to Ryan Tubridy

Ryan,

You are an enjoyable broadcaster – easy to listen to and a pleasant break from many of your more pompous colleagues in Montrose. However your snide reference to the Lord Mayor of Dublin last Sunday was unfair and says more about your colleagues in RTE and the excessive coverage they and you gave to Royston Brady than anything else. Clearly the old phrase “Empty vessels”, etc etc, comes to mind.

The present Lord Mayor, Councillor Michael Conaghan is a thoughtful, active and deeply honourable individual who I have no doubt will serve this City in a lasting way far and beyond the media driven career so loved by those in the media.

I know what it is like to be treated bady by our Public Broadcasting Service who despite nearly 150 million euro in licence fees still fail abysmally to provide full and proper coverage of public affairs – particularly in this City.

Do not confuse active attendance at the vaious Social events around this City as indicative of the activity levels of Public Representatives. Clearly the more you appear in the Social columns the less time you are spending doing the real job. Standing up for Dublin.

Enjoy Tralee.

Councillor Dermot Lacey
Lord Mayor of Dublin 2002-2003
