PD Hypocrisy

“Do PDs ever tire of Hypocrisy?”

Statement by Councillor Dermot Lacey
Labour Councillor Pembroke area.

“The PDs claim that they support directly elected Mayors has a much credibility as recent remarks by the President of Sinn Fein. No right minded person could believe either.”

“The comments at their Conference that the Progressive Democrats now favour the direct election of Mayors and Council Chairpersons comes as a surprise to those of us who have long campaigned for this necessary measure.”

“For despite this pre-local election conversion, it should be remembered that the Progressive Democrats, togther with their Fianna Fail colleagues, voted to remove this right from the people during the debate on the Local Government Bill.”

“We should now be in the final stages of the campaign for the first ever directly elected Lord Mayor of Dublin City. Unfortunately because of the actions of the PD members of the Cabinet and the votes of the PDs in the Dail, together with their allies in hypocrisy in Fianna Fail, the people have been denied this opportunity.”

“Dublin desperately needs a Directly Elected Lord Mayor who would serve for the full term of the City Council. Such a Mayor working with the members of the Council and with sufficient powers and resources is needed now more than ever to rescue this City from the clutching, incompetent and disinterested control of central Government.”

For the PDs, in this the final run in to the Local Elections, to claim they now support such a move, simply shows that when you spend long enough in the company of hypocrites, that it catches.”

Dermot Lacey is a Dublin City Councillor and a former Lord Mayor of Dublin.
