Open the Gates of Fitzwilliam Square

“Open the Gates of Fitwilliam Square”

Statement by Councillor Dermot Lacey
Labour Pembroke Ward

“This forthcoming Local Elections give us all an opportunity to review and debate the future of our Capital City and to campaign for improvements for the betterment of all”, according to the former Lord Mayor of Dublin, Councillor Dermot Lacey.

“Clearly one thing Dublin needs is more parks and recreational facilities. Yet right in the heart of the City we have the continued scandal of a railed in, gated and locked Park, unavailable to the citizens and the thousands who work in the area. This is no longer acceptable.”

“The time has long passed for Fitzwilliam Square to be opened on a regular basis to allow citizens, workers and visitors alike, avail of this amenity which should no longer be the preserve of the few.”

“Thanks to the campaigning spirit of earlier generations, the generousity of the late Archbishop Ryan and the skills and good management of the City Councils Parks Department we now have in Merrion Square a Park second to none and providing endless enjoyment and pleasure to all”

We should now seek the same for Fitzwillam Square Park.
