Cullen – Reflect, Regret, Reject

Time for Martin Cullen and the Three R’s – Reflect, Regret and Reject
Statement by Councillor Dermot Lacey
Labour – Pembroke – Dublin City Council.
Sunday 9th May 2004

“As Dublin City Council prepares for its last meeting prior to the June Elections it is time to reflect on the “what might have been” had Ireland an able, committed and reforming Minister for Local Government”, according to former Lord Mayor of Dublin, Councillor Dermot Lacey.

“Had the City Council the power and the resources, we might have been able to make real inroads to our Housing situation rather than the growing crisis facing so many families and individuals in our Capital City”.

“Had the City Council the power and the resources, we might have been able to tackle the creaking transport deficit and confusion in our City”.

“Had the City Council the power and the resources we might have been able to tackle the major deficits in environmental protection and poor planning”.

“Instead we had Martin Cullen!”

“As the City Council faces into its last meeting on Monday 10th May we must in particular regret the anti-democratic and anti-Dublin bias inherent in the withdrawal by Minister Cullen of the right of the people of this City to elect their own Lord Mayor and his failure to in any way reform the structures of Local Government in Dublin”.

“As the people of Dublin face into the first Elections since the General Election of 2002, it is time for the people of Dublin to reject Martin Cullen and his Party candidates for the deceits of that election, for their failure to stand up and deliver for the people and City of Dublin and perhaps above all for their shameful and underhanded denial of the people’s right to elect their own Lord
Mayor”.
